DON CARLO
Giuseppe Verdi
Family ties fray and unravel in Verdi's spectacle of forbidden passion, political intrigue, and shattering betrayal set at the height of the Spanish Empire. Don Carlo, the King of Spain's son, laments that Elisabeth of Valois, the woman he loves, has been forced to marry his father to forge peace with France. With everyone under the watchful eye of the Grand Inquisitor, tension and paranoia run rampant, leading the king to suspect his wife of infidelity with Carlo. What follows is a fierce struggle between father and son, allegiance and devotion, honor and the heart, with no easy answers--or easy way out.

Inspired by true events during the 12th century, La straniera tells the tale of a French King’s scandalous divorce from a Danish princess and his subsequent marriage to a mysterious foreign woman (“la straniera”), kept tucked away in a wooded cottage. Bellini and librettist Romani heightened the romantic and political complications of this unusual story for their compelling cast of characters.
This bel canto treasure, rarely performed in the United States, will feature three rising stars in their WCO debuts—soprano Amanda Woodbury as Alaide, tenor Gerard Schneider as Arturo, mezzo-soprano Corrie Stallings as Isoletta—and the return of a WCO favorite, baritone Javier Arrey, in the role of Valdeburgo. They are joined by tenor Jonas Hacker (also returning to the WCO stage) as Osburgo, as well as bass-baritone Matthew Scollin as Montolino and bass Timothy Bruno as Il Priore, both in their company debuts.
